War, politics and terrorism spoiled several of the Olympic Games held between 1960 and 1980. At the 1972 Munich Games a terrorist attack killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. In 1976 many African nations refused to compete because a New Zealand Rugby Union team had gone to South Africa, a country that treated its black citizens as inferior to whites at that time. The United States and several other nations boycotted at the 1980 Moscow Games in protest over the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.
