The first Games were held in Athens and were a great success even though only 12 nations were represented and many competitors entered only because they happened to be in Athens at the time. One of these was Australian Edwin Flack, who won both the 800 metres and 1500 metres races. He was Australia's first Olympic competitor, and Australia's first Olympic champion.
