Product Description

Beginning at the end of the 18th century, new technology and manufacturing methods spread from Britain to the continent of Europe. In 1799 the English inventor William Cockerill (1759-1832) set up wool-spinning machines near Liege, in what was then France and is now Belgium. Early in the 19th century, industry developed fast in this region. Coal mines were updated with conveyor belts that increased production, and iron and steel production developed. By the middle of the century, France had joined Britain as an industrial power.
