Product Description

For several reasons, World War I was unlike anything anyone had experienced before.
First, it was global. It did not begin that way. To start with, it was called the Great European War. However, even at this stage there was fighting in several continents and oceans as some of the major combatant nations - especially Great Britain, France, and Germany - had worldwide empires. Imperial rivalry carried the conflict into sub-Saharan Africa. Britain's alliance with Japan produced small-scale warfare in East Asia, and Anglo-German naval battles ensured that gunfire was heard in the Southern Hemisphere. Finally, the entry of the United States into the conflict in April 1917 ensured that what had started as a conflict in the Balkans had escalated into a genuine world war.
