One August 7, 1998, a man walking near the United States Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, heard a thump. He didn know what the noise was or where it was coming from. Then he heard a blast. Glass windows blew in and flames roared out of the stately embassy building. A block away, a buisnessman heard the explosion. He ran out into the street and looked up at the sky. "All you could see were thousands of files flying through the air," he told U.S. News and World Report. "It was nothing but paper, dust and darkness." At virtually the same moment, 450 miles away in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a car bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy. Scorched buildings; burning cars; charred, twisted metal; bloody bodies - the bombings were brutal. Hundred of people were killed, including twelve U.S. citizens. Thousands were seriously wounded. Many died later from their injuries. Before the week was over, newspapers around the world were calling the twin bombings a terrorist attack.
