Saddam Hussein was born far from the riches that decorated the walls and grounds of his royal palaces. He was born on April 28, 1937, in the small village of al-Auja, Iraq. Al-Auja was nothing more than a gatering of mud huts on the outskirts of the town of Tikrit. Tikrit itself was a small town in northern Iraq with no electricity, running water, or paved roads. Health problems and disease were common because of the poor conditions. In thier book Saddam Hussein: A Political Biography, Efraim Karsh and Inari Rautsi state that "in an Iraq village one of every two or three babies" died before reaching their first birthday, "mainly from infirmity and malnutrition."
