At first glance, the terrorist attackes on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, seem to have little in common with the release of sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into the Tokyo subway system in March 1995. The September 2001 attacks were a series of well-choreographed strikes in our own backyard that claimed the lives of thousands. The sarin attack occurred halfway around the world and resulted in fewer than fifteen deaths. Yet the attacks share at least one major characteristic: Both were acts of terrorism.
