Teito meeting with Mikage is to be a short-lived reunion, as his best friend succumbs to Ayanami's control and sacrifices his life to keep Teito from capture. Overwhelmed with guilt, Teito's burning desire to avenge Mikage spurs him on to take the clergy examination, in order to become a bishop and gain the freedom he needs to move about on his own.
