In 1948, Bill Cunningham dropped out of Harvard and moved to New York City aged 19, before starting a hat design business under the label 'William J.' His hat designs were featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and worn by Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Onassis. In the 1960s, when women stopped wearing hats, he folded his business, and became a fashion journalist and photographer.
For over forty years, he was the creative force behind the New York Times columns 'On the Street' and 'Evening Hours'. In his signature French workman's jacket, Cunningham could regularly be seen on his bicycle, photographing fashion trends on the streets of New York. He was the subject of the acclaimed documentary Bill Cunningham, New York (2010) in which Anna Wintour declared 'we all dress for Bill'. But few people knew about his fashion career before photography, the story which forms the basis of this memoir.
Bill Cunningham died in 2016, aged 87. He had always lived frugally, amidst William J. hatboxes and yards of filing cabinets housing his photographic archive. The prepared typescript of his memoir Fashion Climbing was found among his effects.
