The Waters of Our Time was conceived as an homage to Roy DeCarava andand#160;Langston Hughesand#39; book The Sweet Fly Paper of Life published in 1955. It containsand#160;142 of Thomas Romaand#39;s photographs spanning most of his career,and#160;beginning on the cover with a picture taken from his first roll of film shot in 1972, and aand#160;fictional text by Giancarlo T. Roma, written as a first-person narrative recollection inand#160;the voice of an older woman. The written story begins on the bookand#39;s cover and isand#160;interwoven with the photographs, interacting with and ultimately lending a reflectiveand#160;quality to the interplay between them. The title comes from the song andquot;Followandquot; (writtenand#160;by Jerry Merrick and famously sung by Richie Havens, also a Brooklyn native) whoseand#160;lyrics are reproduced throughout the book. A retrospective of sorts, The Waters ofand#160;Our Time, is a book that could only be done in the latter part of this renownedand#160;photographerand#39;s career and with the unique contemplation of his watchful son.
