The term "shoplifting" came into use more than one hundred years ago, when the first department stores sprang up in major cities. Store employees noticed that some of their customers, even wealthy ladies, were occasionally helping themselves to merchandise. Not wanting to accuse their high-society customers of stealing, stores came up with the less ugly-sounding word "shoplifting" to describe what these customers were doing.
