During the First World War (1914-18) millions of men were called up to fight. However, about 16,000 men refused conscription because they believed it was wrong to kill. They were called conscientious objectors (COs), or 'conchies'. COs were men of peace but were treated brutally by governments and the public, forced into the army, thrown into prison, beaten and attacked. Against all the odds they stuck to their principles. Today their treatment is seen as wrong, and their courage continues to influence anti-war activists.
