In the early 1850s, an Augustinian monk named Gregor Mendel began to study botany - the science of plants - at the University of Vienna. Like the other monks in his religious order, he lived at a monastery. The monastery, a quiet campus of thick-walled stone buildings and open, rolling fields, was set in the hills of southern Moravia, a region that today is part of Europe's Czech Republic.
Mendel was fascinated by pea plants. But even more interesting, in his opinion, was what those plants could tell him about inheritance, or the passing of traits from one generation to the next.
