Sadly the events of September 11 also revealed a side of human nature that is even harder to understand. Nineteen others - the hijackers - also died, sacrificing their lives to create the horror of that day. The men all belonged to a group known as Al Qaeda (Arabic for "the foundation" or "the base"), which had proven itself, even before September 11, to be among the most dangerous terrorist organizations in the world. Its ultimate aim, according to the US government, is to unite all Muslims and establish a government that follows the rule of the Caliphs (the spiritual heads of Islam, viewed as direct successors the the prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam). That is, Al Qaeda's members believe that all Muslim countries should have a single ruler, and the Koran should be the law of the land. For this to happen, the secular (non religious) governments of most countries in which Muslims are the majority would have to fall. So Al Qaeda threatens most of the existing governments of the Middle East, as well as some on Africa and Asia.
