Early aircraft were small, flimsy machines, carrying only the pilot and perhaps one crew. But a little over ten years later, in 1914, the First World War broke out in Europe. Aircraft now became weapons of war. The fighters were equipped with machine guns to attack each other in the skies, while some larger aircraft had enough space to carry bombs to drop on enemy territory. By the end of the war in 1918, aircraft were large and powerful enough to fly much longer distances.
