The oceans of the world are vast. They cover more than two-thirds of the surface of the planet and reach down to an average depth of 4,000 metres. They form the world's largest habitat and support tens of thousands of different species of plants and animals. They also help to support all life on land by providing much of the oxygen we breathe. The water cycle starts and ends with oceans and their salt water makes up 97 per cent of all water on our planet.
