Custardly Wart hadn't really planned on becoming a pirate.
...Then a new teacher arrives at the Dankmarsh school for orphans. Custardly is impressed by his black beard and cutlass, and excellent lessons in swordcraft. But he doesn't suspect the darstardly plot being hatched under his very nose until it's too late, and he (and the rest of the class) are already bound for Doom Island.
