It is the story of how exploration and settlement at Port Phillip paved the way for colonising present-day Victoria. Its cast includes the traditionally-known characters of the Batmans, Fawkner, Gellibrand, the Hentys and Governors such as Swanston, McKillop, Gariner and the like. It also portrays the role of 'Wild Bill' Buckley in a new perspective. Except for Buckley and Governor Bourke, all the characters came from Tasmania - 'The Southern Invaders'. There is a detailed account of the attempt by the Port Phillip Association to have its agreement with the Aborigines ratified by the British Government, who approved the settlement but not the treaties.
