Baroness Emma Orczy (1865-1947) was a Hungarian-born British playwright, novelist and artist. The Scarlet Pimpernel, the story of a swashbuckling aristocrat during the French Revolution, is her best-loved work. Originally a play, The Scarlet Pimpernel was a huge hit in the West End and the subsequent novel went on to become one of the most popular successes of the 20th century.
