The importance of the musculoskeletal system is well documented in terms of its impact in determining speed of performance; however, the role of the nervous system is often underestimated. Biology of Speed highlights the involvement of both the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system in determining speed. This resource is centred around three interactive, computer-based simulations. Tool 1 explores response time, both simple response time and choice response time. Tool 2 predicts running speed over a range of distances, for user-defined values for aerobic fitness (VO2max), anaerobic threshold (%VOmax), muscle fibre type and running efficiency. Tool 3 runs simulations of muscle fibre recruitment as the force output increases.
