The Olympic Games were held for the first time int he Southern Hemisphere when Melbourne hosted the Games in 1956. An athletes' village was built in the northern Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg. The way in which the Olympics was conducted led to the 1956 Games being known as the 'Friendly Games'.
