Australians eagerly went to war in 1914, anxious to prove their loyalty and worth to the British Empire. By war's end in 1918, Australia's all-volunteer army - the 'Diggers' - had fought on Gallipoli, in the Middle East, and had endured the Western Front in France, where they suffered the highest per capita casualties in the British Empire. Australia emerged weakened by her terrible losses, but strengthened by a sense of nationhood.
