In 1788, the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove after sailing from England. It had been sent to establish a place to send criminals.
Everything about the new land would have been unfamiliar. Beyond Sydney Cove lay vast, unknown country. Food came from the rations brought on the ships, and soon there were shortages. People had no idea that there was food all around them in the bush. They thought they had to cultivate the land as it had been cultivated in England, and to do this they needed to explore.
