Australia maintains a standing, permanent army of professional soldiers. It is backed up by a part-time Reserve force. All members are volunteers - there is no conscription system in place. In terms of personnel, the army is the largest of the three defence forces. Its primary role is defence rather than offence. This means preventing aggressors from outside the Commonwealth of Australia invading or otherwise threatening the nation. Australia maintains a standing army specifically to defend the nation's democratic systems and the freedoms of the population.
