Western Australia was established as a colony for free settlers on 2 May 1829. At the end of 1830 a Legislative Council, comprising the governor and four officials, was authorised. It did not, however, sit until 7 February 1932. The membership was expanded by four in 1867. All were non-elected, which caused considerable disquiet among the population.
