Product Description

On July 25, 2000, and Air France Concorde jet streaked across the sky trailing flames. Only two minutes after takeoff, it crashed a few miles outside of Paris. With the 113 people killed in the crash, the dream of supersonic travel also seemed to die. A century earlier, supersonic travel - flying fasster than the speed of sound - seemed an impossible dream. After all, a weeklong crossing of the Atlantic in a steamer was considered a rapid form of transportation. Yet by midcentury, the dream of commercial supersonic travel - air travel for paying customers - was becoming a reality, and in 1969 the COncorde became the first passenger plane to break the sound barrier. Two years later, it crossed the Atlantic in less than four hours. A brave new world of air travel had been born.
