It was 1963. I was ten years old, and I was in the hospital. I had been probed, x-rayed, and tested to discover the cause of the pain that I was experiencing. On this day I had come to undergo exploratory surgery. I was wheeled into the operating room. There were adults all around me, gowned from head to foot. I thought, as I looked around me, that I had become a character in one of those scary science fiction television shows I had grown up watching. I was now the one being abducted by aliens. The anesthetist put a mask over my face and had me breathe in deeply. He said to count backward from ten. I had not gotten too far in my counting when I became completely unconscious. When I woke up after the operation, I felt that someone had stuffed my mouth with cotton balls. My mouth was so very dry. I discovered when I looked down that I had a scar line about four inches in length on my abdomen, and I was told that my appendix had been removed.
