The destruction of World War I gave birth to new nations and enabled others to re-establish their ancient independence. Ireland, after centuries of struggle, at alst threw off British rule, but at the cost of partition. Poland, extinguished in the 18th century, was plunged into war almost as soon as it was re-born. Turkey, likewise, arose as a fighting republic out of the wreckage of an empire. Yugoslavia and Czechosolovakia were entirely novel creations, while Lithuania and the other small Baltic states could trace their history back for centuries.
