He has been an intelligence analyst, journalist, senior adviser to Defence Minister Kim Beazley and Prime Minister Bob Hawke, and senior official in the Department of Defence, and was the principal author of Australia's 2000 Defence White Paper. White is professor of strategic studies at the ANU.
