He served in the Second World War and in 1948 joined the Civil Service. In the mid-sixties he completed his first novel, Watership Down, the story of which he originally told to his children to while away a long car journey. Watership Down was awarded both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian award for children's fiction for 1972.Alex T. Smith's Claude was selected for the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize, the Richard and Judy Book Club and is soon to be a TV star on Disney Junior with 52 episodes airing in 2017. Claude Going for Gold! was the winner of the 5-9 fiction Sainsburys Children's Book Award and Alex T. Smith was the World Book Day Illustrator 2014.
