Product Description
Darfur is the western region of the African country of Sudan. In recent years, the people of Darfur have been systematically attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy-militia controlled by the Sudanese government. These militia bands are called the janjaweed. Some believe that 'janjaweed' is a combination of the Arabic words jinn (spirit) and jawad (horse). It also has been interpreted as a combination of the words for evil and horse, translated as 'devils on horseback'. Another theory traces the word's origins to the Persian language, Farsi. According to this explanation, 'janjaweed' is derived from the Persian word for war (jang) and 'janjaweed' means 'warrior'.
